CARTILAGE & BONE MODELS IN SWINE
Swine have not been utilized as one of the primary models for orthopedic procedures due to the massive size of the bones and musculature. However, over the past two decades there has been an increased interest in the development of models for the musculoskeletal system. Studies have indicated that certain aspects of bone growth, cartilage metabolism and healing characteristics make them a preferred model for some aspects of study of this system. Surgical techniques and approaches to the bones and joints have been described in detail.
